If you’ve ever noticed someone with beautiful, perfectly-white, perfectly-straight teeth, and longed for that same smile, chances are you are looking at porcelain veneers.
These are super thin shells of porcelain bonded directly to original teeth. They are very strong and resilient, and completely natural-looking. As a matter of fact, dental porcelain has the same translucent, white look as natural tooth enamel, only better. No one would ever be able to tell that you weren’t born with them!
Porcelain veneers are used to correct a host of issues.
Some of these issues include:
• Chipped teeth
• Misshapen teeth
• Crooked teeth
• Fill in large or small gaps
• Teeth that have been worn down
• Teeth that are yellowed, stained, or dark and non-responsive to whitening
Porcelain veneers are applied to teeth which have had a very small amount of surface enamel removed. This allows the veneer to be completely and perfectly bonded with the tooth. Since they are custom-sized, shaped and colored just for you, the final look is much better than the original tooth!
Some choose veneers for a just a few teeth. This is a great option for correcting chipped teeth, filling in gaps, and other issues. If you are opting for just a few veneers, your dentist will choose a shade of porcelain to perfectly match surrounding teeth.
Porcelain veneers in many ways are even better than original teeth.
For instance, the porcelain is highly resistant to stains. They also are much stronger than natural teeth. And since they are individually-tailored to each person, it is very hard to distinguish between veneers and natural teeth.
After your procedure, you will probably be a little sensitive to hot and cold, but this goes away in just a few days. And of course it is always wise to stay away from things that could potentially damage ANY tooth, either natural or veneers. Like our moms told us, don’t chew ice, chew pencils, or try to open bottles with your teeth! And the same as with natural tooth care, brush well, always floss your veneers, and continue regular dental check-ups and cleanings at least twice a year.
